I invited her to participate in a My Dreams Matter Inspirational Interview and here is what she has to say:

Inspirational Interview with Suzanne Harris Educator Teacher Golden AppleWhat do you do for a living? What is your dream job?

I am presently building my own business while continuing with full time teaching responsibilities. Teaching is one aspect of my life’s purpose but now I am ready to take it to the next level so that I can reach more people. My dream job has a three-fold purpose which is to educate, empower, and inspire others. I want to be able to fulfill this aspiration full-time without being in the confines of a brick-and-mortar building. I have a strong desire to show other people how to create the life they were destined to have.

What motivates you to make your dreams come true?

My desire is to leave a legacy for my children and grandchildren. That’s my GM or “great motivator”. Everyone must have a GM which is simply the one thing that will make you keep moving forward despite any roadblocks that may appear along the journey to success. I want to use my God-given gifts and abilities to make an impact on the world.

What steps are you taking towards reaching your goals?

My steps toward goal attainment is to make sure I am taking persistent action on a regular basis and using my time productively.

How do you deal with fear, doubt and worry?

With all of the transformative work that I have done in the past, I am able to stop fear, doubt, and worry in its track. I read powerful affirmations on a daily basis. I follow a special daily routine that I created to keep me motivated and inspired. I read inspirational material and books on a daily basis. I totally saturate my mind with powerful, life-affirming words. I am transforming myself from the inside out because what you have inside shows up in your outer world. So, my key is to make sure I have good stuff going on inside. It’s about building mind power and I put a lot of work into that area.

“Once you have opened your inner power channel, there will be nothing you can’t accomplish.” Suzanne Harris

Patricia Swayze: Inspirational Interview with a Jewelry Artist
who Lives Her Life For a Living

Patricia Swayze and I met at one of Handmade Galleries “Meet The Artists” Parties, infamous for great art, creative people, and free wine. I had a table set up to give henna tattoos and I was also selling my books. Patricia was standing nearby, at her jewelry case, talking to another artist. After a while, she and I conversed. I learned that she needed help with promotional marketing and she discovered that I helped small business owners do that exact thing. She states,

“Sometimes it can be very hard for a jewelry artist like myself to do the marketing part. It’s hard to find time to do all aspects of a business. I prefer to focus on designing and making jewelry.

Understandably so… there are just some things others can and should do for us, so as not to waste our time on figuring out the “how” of something foreign to our genius. Like marketing; or website coding; or accounting, etc. While she understood the value of having a recognizable logo on business cards, signage, and product tags, she was dragging her feet about branding her jewelry.

After chatting together about the impact a professional look can have on a small business, she was finally inspired to move forward with that once-dream. Over the next couple days, we had a new design up at her online stores, (Etsy and Zibbit); along with printed business cards and jewelry tags.

Afterwards, I asked Patti if she wouldn’t mind participating in a “My Dreams Matter”  Inspirational Interview, and she graciously responded with enthusiasm. Please, let us take pause for another artist’s journey as we get to know Patti a bit. You will fall in love with her beautiful, hand-made jewelry pieces, which are truly timeless creations. Here’s what she has to say about following her own bliss:

What motivates you to want to make your dreams come true?Patti M designs Patricia Swayze Jewelry Artist Inspirational Interview

What motivates me is the passion I have for creating and making jewelry. It is something that I love doing. Before I had my two children I worked as an independent paralegal. I was never without work and sometimes turned it down. It was lucrative  and I was sucessful at it even though I didn’t love it.

Once my first child was born at the age of 39 I knew that I would not return to this job because it was too stressful. I was finished with the corporate world. As a child and teenager my favorite subject was always art. I continued to take art classes while my children were in school. Eventually I got the idea to try making jewelry.

I have been making jewelry for about 8  years but the first six were more of a hobby. It is only more recently that I started wanting to make it into a career. I hope to be successful online and into more retail locations.

What is stopping you from fulfilling your dream career?

Getting enough sales and making a profit. The money I make goes back into my business and is used for more supplies and other necessities. I am financially secure so money isn’t the biggest issue right now. I am semi-retired, and hope that  if I keep pursuing this business I will eventually make a profit.

I want to be able to give a portion of my proceeds to the Los Angeles Mission.  That is the reason that I made my recent collection called the California Collection which consists of iconic pendants representing Los Angeles and nature.

How do you deal with fear, doubt and worry?

I have to tell myself that as long as I am doing what I love not to worry about the money aspect, but it does bother me at times. I have friends that have professional careers and they don’t believe that I have a real career. They tell me that I have a nice hobby or that making jewelry is very therapeutic. Sometimes I think who am I kidding?

I have tried quitting but always seem to go back to it because I get inspired when I think of new designs. There are times when I get discouraged because I am a better artist than a business person when it comes to the marketing aspect. In the past I tried to get my daughter involved but I realized that she has her own dreams. My dreams are not her dreams.

“I have always heard that do what you love and the rest will follow. I always thought that was only for the lucky few. Now I am starting to think that it is just a matter of being positive and really wanting to fulfill your dreams.

Why not me?”

What steps are you taking towards reaching your goals?

I am trying to focus more and finish one task at a time. In the past I was making one-of-a-kind pieces. I now want to concentrate on making pieces that I can repeat so that I have a more cohesive line of jewelry.

I network with other creative people who have similar interests.  I try to work every day on some aspect of my jewelry. I have found that if I exercise first in the morning, I am able to do more work and concentrate better.

Enjoy Each Baby Step

I live on a hill about 1400 feet above sea level. To give an idea of the incline, the city at the bottom of the hill, two miles away, is at approximately 700 feet. I set an intention recently to be more active on a daily basis, so the steep incline in front of me is seen as an exciting challenge. The beginning of my exercise routine is easy, pleasant, and relaxing. I step down the hill gently and quickly; my breath is free; my gaze is up through the trees, at the blue, cloudless sky. My body feels light and strong at the same time. My arms swing loosely at my sides. My mind is able to drift into a state of gratitude, as I realize that I am surrounded by nature, in a healthy body, with an open heart.

I walk down about a quarter of a mile where a voice signals inside me, “remember: you still have to go back up”. I acknowledge the message; assess how my body feels; and decide I can go further. Another quarter of a mile down the hill, the signal is louder, more insistent, and includes “turn around now”. This time, I listen to my instinctual cry and I turn around.

Step by Step Baby Steps Hike Malibu Hill

Before I start back up the half-mile trek, I take a moment to scan my body from head to toe. I sense that while walking down hill, my shoulders were broad and pushed back. I stood tall and the majority of my body weight lay upon the heels of my feet. I adjust my center of balance and take my first step back up the incline. Instantly, I’m aware of the contrast in difficulty between cruising down and climbing up the slope. Now my shoulders are forward; I seem to only be able to look down at the ground in front of me; and my weight sits on the balls of my feet.

It doesn’t take long for me to grow weary. I realize that I’m kind of far from home and the only way to reach my destination is by walking up a steep hill, without water. Sweat forms on my body and worrisome thoughts enter my mind. I am in anguish over how long it will take me to get back home. What if I get a headache from the heat and exhaustion? Will anyone drive by to save me if I collapse from fatigue? The more I torment myself about the difficulties of this endeavor, the harder it becomes.

But then, something happens. I shift my thinking back into my body. I notice that the back of my legs tingle with activation. I take note of that and imagine the area healing. I visualize the muscle being massaged and woken up by my activity. I acknowledge that this sensation is the reason I set the intention to be more active in the first place.  I understand that my fears were focused on something distant from me (my end destination), which was causing me to miss out on experiencing anything real about the individual moments.

So, instead of agonizing over how many thousands of footsteps I would have to take before water could quench my thirst, I shift my attention to the feeling in my right foot as it makes contact with the paved street. Then, as my left foot touches ground, I notice how multiple muscles in my leg allow this action to happen. Then, I observe how my fists are clenched. I spread my fingers wide, loosen my shoulders, and address any and all areas of my body that seem tense or uncomfortable. I release all tension with my exhale. I grasp at life energy with every inhale.

I pay attention to my breath, making sure that it is harmonious with my body’s motions. I scrutinize how far apart each step is, matching the left stride with the right. I create a rhythm but maintain focus on the individual beats. Each step presents a new piece of scenery in front of my eyes. Birds chirp and sing while bugs and bees buzz overhead and around me. I take each moment as it is. Everything that is real in each moment is fully available for me to experience.

I hold fast to consistency while adapting to the variety of every passing second. Eventually, I become fully preoccupied in the present moment: where I am; what I’m doing; how I’m doing it; and why. And then, before I know it, I’m home, celebrating how easy that was; excited to do it again the next day. I check the clock to see that my one mile hike up and down a really steep hill took just a little over fifteen minutes. At the end of it, I am comfortable, resting, and rejuvenating in the solace of my home. The fear-voices in my mind initially shared horror stories of exhaustion and fatigue. Not only did I avoid struggling up the hill, I was able to embrace each moment and enjoy every labored step.

Overcome Fear by staying present and in the moment.

Stepping back to look at a bigger picture, I now attempt to apply this philosophy to all of my life goals. When I think about a particular dream or goal (it could be a healthier diet; a financial goal; something I’d like to accomplish, etc), I stroll lightly down to the valley floor, building the dream piece by piece in my mind. When I’m ready to do the work, I turn around and prepare myself for the long, arduous flight up the steady incline. I avoid being discouraged by the thousands of steps I must take in order to succeed, by simply directing my focus on one baby step at a time. I tred lightly, with a soft and open heart, and a smile on my face.

I notice the end goal, and set my course towards that destination, but I do not dwell on how I will get there, or even when. I am present with the unique moments as I move through them. I pay attention to my pacing, as I do not want to charge up a steep hill only to be burned out. I let each moment express itself to me as it is. I observe it; I welcome it; I return gratitude. Before I know it, I am at my destination, looking back at the joyous journey I took in order to manifest this dream. It will not have been a struggle, because of an understanding of how to avoid suffering, by simply choosing to be happy.
